When Mum retired, she quietly signed up for a Seniors Card — quietly being the key word.

She’d worked hard her whole life, saved carefully, and earned every bit of the modest retirement she’d built for herself. She was active in her community, social, always busy. And yet, despite having the card in her wallet, she rarely used it.

When we asked her why, she gave us a simple, honest answer: she felt a little awkward asking for a discount.

That stayed with us. Here was someone who had contributed to her community for decades — who absolutely deserved every bit of support available to her — and yet the small act of asking felt like an imposition. It wasn’t that businesses weren’t welcoming. It was that she didn’t always know which businesses offered a discount, or how to bring it up naturally.

Why we built this

We wanted to take the guesswork — and the awkwardness — out of the equation. Instead of wondering “do you offer a Seniors Card discount?”, our users can walk in already knowing. They can browse nearby businesses, see exactly what’s on offer, and arrive with confidence.

Seniors shouldn’t have to feel uncomfortable about accessing what they’ve earned. Golden Handshake is our way of making sure they don’t have to.

Golden Handshake is an Australian Seniors Card discount directory, built to support retirees and their carers across Australia. We source data directly from State Government Seniors Card programs, so every listing is verified and legitimate.
